Darren Gilbert's art is deeply rooted in his love for Australia's environment. He strives to live in harmony with nature, and this connection is reflected in his work. Darren's studio is filled with intricate drawings of native birds, showcasing his attention to detail. From preliminary sketches to large-scale ink works, each piece demonstrates his skill and dedication.
Darren's sculptures, on the other hand, breathe new life into salvaged metal sourced from old farms, sheds, and homes across Victoria. Each piece of metal carries a unique history, with stories and sounds absorbed over time. He employs the Fibonacci Sequence, a mathematical equation that helps him map out each piece, using the rule of thirds to create aesthetically pleasing compositions laid out in a spiral. The rust that naturally forms on the metal adds a beautiful, earthy quality to the sculptures, which Darren often enhances with subtle touches of paint, blending the natural patina with vibrant colors.
Through his art, Darren celebrates Australian fauna, inviting viewers to appreciate the intricate details of native species. His pen and ink drawings showcase the patterns of plumage, expressive eyes, and unique textures of the animals he depicts. His sculptures are organic, quirky, and contemporary, drawing inspiration from the natural landscape. Giant seed pods, stylized leaves, and abstract bird forms are just a few examples of the shapes that inform his work.
